Mammograms and clinical breast exams are an important part of an annual surveillance plan for women ages 40 +, who are at an average risk of developing breast cancer.   Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the US, with the exception of certain forms of skin cancer. It is also the second-leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). About 1 in 8 women will get invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.  This is why surveillance and prevention is key to health and longevity.  Our breast care specialist will counsel you to determine the recommended imaging surveillance and breast exam screening that is tailored to your individual needs based on your personal history and your family history.  Women with a significant family history of breast cancer may need additional breast imaging such as a breast ultrasound or breast MRI.  Our breast care specialist will do a thorough history and physical to provide you with an ideal surveillance plan.  She will also provide you with recommendations for lifestyle modification  to assist in reducing your risk.
